Dramaland surely knows how to put all the elements of nature to use. Snow, wind, sun and rain all serve a purpose in the plot and characters’ development. But among them, rain seems to be the most appreciated. Whether it’d be to emphasize the character’s personality; or to simply highlight the power of main leads’ feelings, some rain scenes are forever printed in our memory.
Here are 11 great rain scenes that most of you may already know! Enjoy and tell which one is your favorite and/or if you’d add others to the list?
Moon Lovers (2016)
In this historical fantasy drama, Hae Soo (IU) is transported back to the Goryeo era during a total eclipse of the sun. There, she gets involved with the royal family and its numerous princes. Among them, Hae Soo catches the eye of the dark and ruthless masked Prince Wang So (Lee Joon Gi). Despite his terrifying aura, Hae Soo falls in love with him. Wang So is also keen on protecting the woman he loves, whether it’d be through big or small gestures, like protecting her from the rain.
Everything in Moon Lovers is iconic, from its main lead, to the cast to this memorable rain scene. Even the end, and especially the big finale, will stay with you for a very long time after watching the last minute of this masterpiece.
Mr. Queen (2020)
Another historical fantasy drama involving time-travel. After a near-death experience, the arrogant Chef of the Blue House, Jang Bong Hwan (Choi Jin Hyuk), ends up entering the body of Queen Kim So Young (Shin Hye Sun). Due to her family background, she is not appreciated by the King, who distrusts her. Yet, the sudden shift in his Queen’s behavior arouses his curiosity. From a shy and cold noble, she turns into a daring and strong-headed woman. Of course, feelings get involved making it hard for the two souls to cohabitate in one body.
This rain scene in Mr. Queen has really marked K-Dramas fans due to the discrepancy between the King’s thinking and the Queen’s actual behavior. The former is pondering on his Queen in a romantic atmosphere, while the latter simply enjoys the rain; moving her hips on a rhythmical music.
Legend of the Blue Sea (2016-2017)
Like Lyn’s song says: ‘This is love story’ and what a love story! It all starts in 1598, when governor Dam Ryung (Lee Min Ho) meets a beautiful mermaid named Shim Chung (Jun Ji Hyun). It’s love at first sight, yet the two lovebirds will have to wait centuries before being reunited.
Every single detail of this rain scene is iconic: Shim Chung’s pink dress, the heavy rain,, the romantic song that transcends time and of course Lee Min Ho’s visuals. It got so famous that the scene has been used as the poster of the drama. Like I said, a classic!
Goblin (2016-2017)

Goblin is probably one of the greatest K-Dramas of all time! The story between this hundreds-year-old goblin in search of his bride got everyone hooked to their screen and asking for more. The drama mixes perfectly well fantasy and romance. You witness fate in action firsthand, while hoping it won’t be too cruel on this star-crossed couple in this modern timeline.
Gong Yoo and Kim Go Eun are a splendid pair-up, who can turn an innocent rain scene into a fated encounter.
Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food (2018)

You may not know it, but the alternate title of Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food is Something in the Rain. The name is just a preview of what to expect in this drama that tells the complicated, but heartwarming love story of Yoon Jin Ah (Son Ye Jin) and her little brother’s best friend Seo Joon Hee (Jung Hae In).
Their kiss under the rain is more than satisfying, as it symbolizes the full blossom of their love. They confess their love to each other, in spite of the pouring rain and their families’ reluctance.
Pinocchio (2014-2015)

Pinocchio is a 2015 masterpiece that sheds light on the fine line that exists between truth and lies. Kim Ha Myeong’s (Lee Jong Suk) father used to be a firefighter. An incident took place causing the death of his father and numerous victims. While investigating the event, the media relies on the testimony of a man who has Pinocchio Syndrome, meaning that he gets hiccup if he lies. The latter affirms he has seen Ha Myeong’s father alive. This simple statement destroys the young kid’s family. Though his mother decides to commit suicide with her 2 kids, Ha Myeong survives. He is adopted by an old man and changes his name to Choi Dal Po. He is raised alongside Choi In Ha (Park Shin Hye) for whom he develops feelings. She also has Pinocchio Syndrome. Both want to become reporters.
This rain scene is as cute as absurd. Upon realizing In Ha’s umbrella is broken, Dal Po finds no better solution than to take shelter under traffic cones. This simple gesture shows his affection, and so far unrequited love, towards In Ha.
She Was Pretty (2015)

Ji Sung Joon (Park Seo Joon) used to be fat and ugly. He had a crush on the popular and pretty Kim Hye Jin (Hwang Jung Eum), who was always kind to him. Years later, their appearance changed. Sung Joon became a handsome man, contrary to Hye Jin. Problems start when the latter asks her best friend to pretend she is her because she feels ashamed of her ugly appearance. The situation gets worse when Sung Joon and Hye Jin end up working together.
The reason why this rain scene deserves a spot in that list isn’t because it’s a heart-fluttering moment for both characters, but rather because rain holds a special meaning in the drama. When Sung Joon was younger, Hye Jin used to comfort him on rainy days. Since then, he’s always associated rain with her. No wonder that he gets suspicious about her real identity years later, when Hye Jin flies to his rescue and protects him once again.
While You Were Sleeping (2017)
In this drama, Nam Hong Joo (Bae Suzy) has the ability to dream about people’s upcoming death. But she never knows when the event is supposed to occur. Jung Jae Chan (Lee Jong Suk) is a rookie prosecutor. Right after becoming Hong Joo’s new neighbor, he dreams of her death and that of her mother. As he feels his dream is about to turn into reality, he takes extreme measures to put an end to the chain of events leading to Hong Joo’s death. After that, both get involved and start solving cases together.
The kiss/rain scene in While You Were Sleeping has become quite famous in Dramaland for two reasons. First, the main leads and their undeniable chemistry. Second, and mostly, for its double timeline. Mixing reality and dream, the drama shows that this moment was eventually bound to happen. A classic!
What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim (2018)
You probably can’t get more cliché than this rain scene! But what makes it even more memorable is the way Lee Young Joon (Park Seo Joon) manages to be arrogant and romantic at the same time. In just 2 sentences, the CEO shows where his heart is. He would rather sacrifice his limited edition jacket than to let his lovely secretary Kim Mi So (Park Min Young) get wet. The least he could do if he wants to conquer her heart and make her stay by his side.
Love Rain (2012)

Love Rain is probably one of the main reasons why the yellow umbrella became so important in Dramaland. There is no way you’ve never heard or seen it! It didn’t start with this drama of course (2003 movie The Classic also showcased it), but it became greatly popular with Love Rain.
Rain scenes are a red (or yellow) thread in the story connecting the 1970s and present days. Back in the days, Seo In Ha (Jang Geun Suk) and Kim Yun Hee (Im YoonA) fell in love. But the circumstances set them apart. In present time, Seo Jun, In Ha’s son, falls in love with Ha Na, Yun Hee’s daughter. As a twist of fate, parents and children (re)connect at the same time.
Splash Splash Love (2015)

If you have never heard of Splash Splash Love, now is the time to discover this 2-episode MBC gem. Though very short, the drama has everything to make you hooked at the first second: the story, the cast (Yoo Doo Joon, Kim Seul Gi, Ann Hyo Seop and Jin Ki Joo) and of course the romance.
Jang Dan Bi (Kim Seul Gi) is a senior in high school. On a rainy day, she jumps into a puddle and is transported to the Joseon dynasty. There, she meets King Lee Do (Yoon Doo Joon). They fall in love. All the rain scenes in the drama are worth the watch, as rain allows the connection between the two timelines. Nonetheless, each moment makes your heart flutter.
