Some characters in Dramaland have it rough; clearly rougher than others. Instead of the bubbly, innocent and joyful childhood that most children get to experience, these young boys and girls discover the tough reality quite early.
From abuse to kidnapping, the following K-Drama characters have clearly suffered from a traumatic event that still impacts their lives as adults whether it’d be the psychological damage or the haunting memory of that time. Fortunately, they get to meet new people, supporting and cheering for them, helping them heal their wounds and bandage their broken hearts.
Though the theme is never light-hearted, I really love dramas tackling serious topics like mental health, child abuse, fanaticism… Such subjects very often give a lot more complexity to the plot and depth to the characters. These works also offer a realistic point of view, and convey key take-aways that enable the audience to open its eyes and ears to matters considered as taboo. In a way, they give a voice to victims, while providing precious advice on how to deal with such things.
In the list below, you will find pieces that are quite relatable, and others that are a bit more fictitious. Still, they all refer to a trauma that happened in characters’ childhood and that still lingers in their daily life.
Any other traumatic childhood you’d add to the list?

The latter is intent on not letting Moo Young and Jin Kang develop feelings for each other, as he considers the young man to be a liability, involved in a woman’s death.
