Location: 1 Cheonggyecheon-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul
There’s no better place in Seoul than Cheonggyecheon if you want to walk along water whether it’d be in winter, when you can see lanterns and lights; or in summer, when you can enjoy the freshness of the stream helping against the hot temperatures. Popular among residents, tourists, and – so it seems – characters in Dramaland, this public recreational space is unanimously approved by everyone since its opening to the public in 2005.
The name of the stream used to be ‘Gaecheon’ meaning ‘open stream’. But it was named ‘Cheonggyecheon’ when Korea was under Japanese rule. Years of neglect dried up the stream that was turned into an express highway in 1976, as more and more people started to move to Seoul.
But in 2003, the mayor of Seoul Lee Myung Bak decided to recreate the stream as part of a gigantic, and very expensive urban project. Costing between 280 and 335 million of dollars, Cheonggyecheon stream is now considered a real success despite the many criticisms it attracted at the beginning. Proof is that dramas are constantly filmed at that location.
